We Tested 5 AI Website Tools So You Don't Have To

We ran five of the most-talked-about AI website builders through their paces. Here's what they're actually good for — and where they fall apart for local businesses.

Article

AI website builders are everywhere right now. They promise a professional site in 30 seconds, SEO baked in, no developer needed. Starting at $30 a month. Maybe less.

Some of them are genuinely impressive. Some of them will get you a site that looks fine until a real customer tries to find you — and can't.

We spent time inside five of the most-talked-about AI website tools so you don't have to waste yours. Here's what we found, what they're good for, and where they quietly fall apart.

The Five Tools We Looked At

Primepage.ai · Durable · Wix AI · Squarespace AI · Hostinger AI

We looked at each one through a specific lens: would a local service business in Southeast Michigan — a plumber, an HVAC company, a campground, a nonprofit — actually rank, convert, and compete using this tool? That's the only question that matters.

Primepage.ai — Audit First, Build Second

Primepage leads with a smart hook: enter your URL, get an SEO audit score, then get an AI-generated replacement site built around fixing what the audit found. The chat-to-edit interface is clean. You describe a change in plain English and watch it happen.

What works: The audit-first approach is the right instinct. Most site builders skip this entirely and just hand you a template. Primepage at least acknowledges that what you have matters. The before/after transformation demos are compelling, and at $30/month the price point is hard to argue with at face value.

What doesn't: The audit is automated scoring — not competitive intelligence. It tells you your site has missing meta tags. It doesn't tell you that your three closest competitors all have online booking, real Google reviews embedded, and emergency CTAs above the fold on mobile while you have a contact form from 2019. That gap is what actually costs you leads.

The social proof on the site is also thin. Over 4,000 users claimed, but the testimonials are a handful of first-name reviews with no verifiable business names, no Google profile links, no review dates you can cross-reference. Exactly the kind of trust signal problem we flag in every Blueprint audit we run.

Best for: A business owner who wants to tinker with their existing site and get some quick SEO feedback. Not a replacement for strategy.

Durable — Fastest Site You'll Ever Build That Nobody Finds

Durable's claim to fame is a website in 30 seconds. That's real — we timed it. You type your business type and city, and a full site appears: copy, images, layout, contact form.

Durable bundles website builder, CRM, invoicing, and marketing tools into a single subscription starting around $22/month billed annually. For a solo operator who needs to get online fast and wants client management in one place, that's a reasonable deal.

What works: Speed. Simplicity. The all-in-one billing is genuinely convenient for someone managing 10 things at once. The map integration for local businesses is a nice touch.

What doesn't: Users consistently report limited design flexibility, weak SEO features, and mobile rendering problems. Mobile rendering issues are a direct SEO problem — Google uses mobile-first indexing. A site that doesn't work on a phone isn't getting ranked.

There's also a deeper issue. Durable generates a site from your business name and city. It doesn't know your actual competitors. It just generates something that looks professional and calls it done. That's a starting point, not a strategy.

Best for: A brand-new business that needs something up today and will rebuild properly once revenue justifies it.

Wix AI — The Most Capable, the Most Complicated

Wix is the most mature platform in this category. It offers 2,000+ templates, 20+ AI features, 300+ app integrations, and full eCommerce. Genuinely powerful.

What works: If you want design control and a real app ecosystem, Wix is the strongest tool on this list. The SEO tools are more sophisticated than the others. You can build something genuinely custom if you're willing to put in the time.

What doesn't: "Willing to put in the time" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The more capable a tool is, the more decisions it hands back to you — and most local business owners don't have the time or expertise to make those decisions well. An HVAC company owner shouldn't be building page hierarchies and configuring schema markup. They should be running their business.

There's also the platform dependency issue. Everything you build in Wix stays in Wix. You don't own the code. You can't export it.

Best for: A marketing-savvy business owner willing to invest time learning the platform and managing it long-term.

Squarespace AI — Beautiful Websites That Whisper

Squarespace makes gorgeous sites. The AI layer helps with copy and design suggestions, and the templates are the best-looking on this list.

What works: Design quality is genuinely best-in-class for templates. For a photographer, a boutique hotel, a wedding planner — businesses where visual presentation is the product — Squarespace has no peer at the self-serve price point.

What doesn't: Local SEO is where Squarespace has always struggled, and the AI additions haven't fixed this. LocalBusiness schema is not automatic. GBP integration is manual. Service area pages are not a native concept. For a plumber in Canton or an HVAC company in Northville competing for map pack visibility, a beautiful Squarespace site is a liability — it looks great and doesn't rank.

Best for: Service businesses where visual brand is the primary selling point. Not for local services competing on search.

Hostinger AI — Cheapest Entry, Thinnest Output

Hostinger added an AI website builder to its hosting product and priced it aggressively — starting at $1.99/month in some tiers. For pure price-per-site, nothing comes close.

What works: The price. If you need something live today and have no budget, Hostinger gets you there.

What doesn't: Generic copy, stock images, minimal SEO infrastructure. No competitive context, no local signals, no schema. It's a placeholder, not a presence.

Best for: Parking a domain while you plan the real build. Nothing more.

What None of Them Do

Here's the honest summary across all five tools.

Every AI website builder on this list generates a site from your business name, category, and location. Some do it beautifully. Some do it in 30 seconds. Some bundle in a CRM. None of them ask: what are your five closest competitors doing that you're not?

That question is the one that actually determines whether your site wins or loses in local search. Your business doesn't compete against a generic template. It competes against the specific companies in your market who are showing up above you on Google Maps right now.

An AI tool can build you a professional-looking website. It cannot tell you that your top competitor has 347 verified Google reviews and you have 12, or that nobody in your local market is running emergency service pages optimized for mobile — and that building one would own that traffic.

That analysis is what we do before we build anything. It's called the Advantage Blueprint, and it's why every site we deliver is built to outperform the specific competition in your market — not just look good next to a generic template.

The Bottom Line

AI website tools are useful. They're getting better. For a brand-new business with no presence and no budget, Durable or Hostinger get you something real fast.

But if you have competitors showing up above you — or if you're ready to actually win in local search instead of just exist — an AI template isn't the answer. The answer starts with knowing exactly where the gaps are and building to fill them.
